Pen name of Marie Henri Beyle (1783-1842) was a French novelist. His two major novels Le Rouge et le noir/The Red and the Black in 1830 and La Chartreuse de Par me/The Charterhouse of Parma in 1839 were pioneering works in their treatment of disguise and hypocrisy; a review of the latter by OBalzac in 1840 furthered his reputation.
