As fish developed jaws, they were able to hunt other animals. Soon they evolved into large creatures, sometimes with armor to protect them. The most fearsome fish grew to 9 m in length.

Dinichthys (also known as Dunklosteus) had a long, powerfully built body, with fins like an eel. Its 2 m long head was covered with bony armor, and could be raised to allow it to open its mouth wide.
