There are now only two types of living elephant but in the past there were many different types. Deinotherium was like a giant elephant, 4 m high at the shoulder.

It had huge, downward-curving tusks in the lower jaw, which it probably used to dig up roots to eat. Other forms had tusks in both upper and lower jaws, and the hoe-tuskers had tusks in the lower jaw that were flattened into a shovel like shape.
