Anna Helene Paquin was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada on July 24, 1982, by parents Mary Paquin, an English teacher, native of Wellington, New Zealand, and Brian Paquin, a high school physical education teacher.

Anna Paquin is the youngest of three children and she was two older siblings, a brother named Andrew, born in 1977, and a sister Katya, born in 1980. Anna Paquin's family moved to New Zealand when she was four.
