Maximilian I (1459-1519) had acquired the Low Countries through his marriage to Mary of Burgundy in 1477.

Short Biography:

He married his son Philip I (the Handsome) to the heiress to the Spanish throne, and undertook long wars with Italy and Hungary in attempts to extend Habsburg power. He was the patron of the artist Durer.
