Max Beckmann (1884-1950) was an German Expressionist painter, who fled the Nazi regime in 1933 for the USA.

After World War I his art was devoted to themes of cruelty in human society, portraying sadists and their victims with a harsh style of realism.
Max Beckmann was born in Leipzig, Germany.
He fought in World War I, and was discharged following a breakdown, reflected in the agony of his work; pictures include Carnival and The Titanic.
