James Batcheller Sumner (1887-1955) succeeded in crystallizing the enzyme urease and demonstrating its protein nature in 1926.
Short Biography:
For this work Sumner shared the 1946 Nobel Prize for Chemistry with John Northrop and Wendell Stanley.
Despite the loss of an arm as a youth, Sumner spent his entire career as an experimental chemist, at Cornell University, New York.
