James Whale (1886-1957) initially went to Hollywood to film his stage success Journey's End in 1930, and went on to direct four horror films: Frankenstein in 1931, The old Dark House in 1932, The Invisible Man in 1933, and Bride of Frankenstein in 1935. He also directed Showboat in 1936.
