The strength and location of earthquakes are measured by an instrument called a seismograph, which can detect ground movements. Sometimes the movements from an earthquake can be detected thousands of kilometers away.
The Richter scale measures their strength. An earthquake measuring two on the Richter scale is very slight and would probably not be detected, but one measuring more than seven will destroy buildings.
