Jeff began racing at an early age of five, racing quarter midgets. Jeff competed for the first time on The Roy Hayer Memorial Race Track in California.
By the age of 13 he started driving sprint cars. For his career his family moved to Indiana. Before the age of 18, he had won three short-track races. At the age of 20 he became the youngest driver to win the season championship.
In 1991 and 1992, Gordon went on to the Busch Series driving for Bill Davis Racing. In 1992, he set a NASCAR
