Pieter Brueghel (c. 1525-1569), was one of the greatest artists of his time.
He painted satirical and humorous pictures of peasant life, many of which include symbolic details illustrating folly and inhumanity, and a series of Months (five survive), including Hunters in the Snow (Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna).
The elder Pieter was nicknamed "Peasant" Brueghel. Two of his sons were painters.
