Saint Thomas Becket (1118-1170) was an English priest and politician.
He was chancellor to Henry II (1155-1162), when he was appointed archbishop of Canterbury. The interests of the church soon conflicted with those of the crown, and Becket was assassinated; he was canonized in 1172.
A friend of Henry II, Becket was his chancellor, but on becoming archbishop of Canterbury in 1162 transferred his allegiance to the church.
