Rehab Brought Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith Closer Together

Rehab Brought Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith Closer Together

Tuesday, April 27 2010

Melanie Griffith entered rehab for the third time last August, after a decades struggle with substance abuse. While she was under medical treatment in order to starve her addiction, medical told that her husband was her biggest cheerleader during her struggle.

"He did everything," Griffith said to PEOPLE. "He has been an amazing man."

Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas have been married for fourteen years. Melanie had entered rehab in 1988 and 2000. Her third battling with substance abuse was last August. The famous actress admits she has been having problems with cocaine, liquor, and painkillers for over a decade.

Even if there were rumors saying the couple was having difficulties, Antonio Banderas has always dismissed them.

Moreover, Banderas stood by his wife all this time, giving her all the support that he needed. He, more than anyone else, helped her to stay sober.

"The entire family participated in the process of rehabilitation. We went to the place where she was doing it, we participated in all the therapies ... everything, everybody in the family. It's tough, but at the same time, very rewarding," Banderas said. "It's tough."

The history of the couple begins while filming 'Two Much'. Melanie Griffith was married to Don Johnson that time. He soon left him to marry Banderas on May 14, 1996. The couple have a child, Stella Banderas.

When talking about his wife's problems, Banderas admits he is not ashamed of Griffith's addictions. His love for her is too strong. He stays by her unconditionally, as much as she needs.

"I just say to families, 'Don't get embarrassed, just confront this problem head-on. And don't hide from that because there is a beautiful gift at the end of this tunnel, and it is the person that you love back, and that is what I am searching for. So the whole entire family is supporting her, and I am supporting her, and at this particular time more than ever. I'm very proud of her," Banderas said back in 2009.

Melanie is doing wonderful. How can her husband not to be proud of her? He is happier than ever.

"There were people who literally didn't give us more than six months!" the famous actor said. "But we love each other, and above all we love our family. We've figured out how to get past obstacles ... and if you get past those, you only get stronger."

As for Melanie, she says she got rid of this bad habit.

"Now I feel free," she says. "I don't drink. I don't take pills. Nothing. And it's fantastic. It's like getting out of prison," she tells.
