Guiding Light has been running for 72 years now from the time it started as a radio program. But CBS said that they will air the last episode of this show on September 18 owing to low ratings.

It has now become the longest running soap opera in the history of television according to the Guiness World Records. By the day of the last episode, the series will cross a staggering number of 15,700 episodes since its beginning.

"Guiding Light" was previously aired on NBC Radio and came to television in the year 1952 when it transferred to CBS. Senior vice president and MD of Telenext Media, Brian T. Cahill, said that they are trying to find a new network which can take the responsibilities of broadcasting the show. "We are exploring all our options to continue to bring loyal fans the characters and stories they love", he added. Telenext Media, Inc., is the production house for the long-running "Guiding Light".

According to the CBS president, Nancy Tellem, no other show can achieve the history Guiding Light has created on television. She feels that the show matched the pace with "decades of social change" as no other show has ever done.
