Malawian Court Denied Madonna’s Request for Another Adoption

Friday, April 3 2009

by Joe Halls

Despite Madonna’s intention to adopt another Malawian orphan, Chifundo 'Mercy' James, Malawian Judge Esimie Chombo turned down the Queen of Pop’s request for an interim adoption of a second child from their country. In retrospect, Madonna and former husband Guy Ricthie adopted a Malawian boy named David Banda in 2006. Several speculations surrounded the media that the couple violated the adoption laws of Malawi.

The main reason why the judge decided not to permit the singer of adopting the three-year-old child was because the singer failed one requirement wherein prospective parents should be a resident of their country for 18 to 24 months prior to the adoption.

Judge Chombo warned that the very fast process of celebrity adoptions can possibly lead to child trafficking. “Anyone could come to Malawi and quickly arrange for an adoption that might have grave consequences on the very children that the law seeks to protect,” she added.
