CBS Daytime Soap Opera, Guiding Light, To End After 72 Years

Thursday, April 2 2009

by Joe Halls

‘Guiding Light’ was first launched on NBC radio in 1937, and began on CBS TV in 1952. According to the Guinness Book of Records, it is the world's longest-running TV drama. However, it suffered a great decline of audiences in the U.S.

"The numbers are really tough for all of these old dramas," Ron Raines, the show’s villain, said. "I don't think any of the other shows want any of us to go off. We're all in this together."

The show had an overhaul last year, leaving its old set to give way to a more modern atmosphere. However, the changes were never transformed into good viewing figures. It still failed to capture the viewing public. So, CBS announced that Guiding Light’s final episode will air on September 18, 2009.
